Customer expectations are rising, while tech capabilities are expanding.

To help businesses survive and capitalize on these opportunities, EA must keep pace with current trends – and predict future ones.

While we consider ourselves to be experts in new EA, the most meaningful insights really come from the people who are actually putting it into practice within their organizations –- our customers.

So we turned to a number of IT leaders – CTOs, EAs, CDOs etc – to understand the latest trends driving its evolution.

From our interviews, three key themes emerged:

Trend 1: More relevant data-driven response

Businesses are hungry for data. They want data-driven tools and services that will increase visibility, improve efficiency, and boost customer value. Data-driven EA provides these through an easier mapping process, where concrete data steps allow the effectiveness of each system to be measured quantitatively.

This opens up discussion to include people with less technical knowledge but more business understanding. The questions become more relevant to achieving business goals and so do the answers.

New EA takes a data-driven approach to delivering better decision-making tools to its end-users, allowing them to better serve their customers. It ensures that the changes being put forward to the C-suite are the right changes for the organization.

Trend 2: Agility and flexibility

New EA adapts the framework to the organization's unique situation. Rigid frameworks have given way to the ability to explore different scenarios, accommodate changing needs and adjust the model on the fly.

This means that end-users can: recognize their reality in the documentation, see the value and relevance of the modelT, take ownership and be empowered to further develop it themselves

Disruptive technologies, increasing consumer power, and changing regulatory demands mean that people, processes, and systems must constantly evolve for the business to survive. The flexibility of new EA enables this greater agility.

Trend 3: Speed of change

New technologies are arising so quickly that disruption is almost constant. An increasing number of businesses are operating in complex domains and chaotic environments. Organizations need to be more dynamic, better adapted, and respond faster to emerging change.

Structure is less important. Agility and the ability to adapt is critical. In response, new EA has shifted focus from planning and strategizing into the discovery domain – asking the right questions at the right time to deliver better solutions to the business faster.
